Abstract
A two-layer model of a vortex in the neighbourhood of a plane solid boundary is proposed. Series solutions in terms of a small parameter are used to determine the flow pattern in the turbulent boundary layer beneath the vortex. It is then found that the axial velocity in the vortex is defined by the flow in the boundary layer. The results are shown to bear a close resemblance to known flows in tornadoes.
